Pulse-phase thermography

The future of non-destructive material testing

Weld inspection with pulse-phase thermography

Pulse phase thermography not only enables the surface of components to be inspected, but also allows internal structures to be analyzed. For example, the bond cross-section of laser welds can be reliably determined.

Advantages

  • Completely contactless and non-destructive

  • Extremely short testing times (typically < 1 second per test position)

  • High precision in the detection of hidden material defects

How it works

Pulse phase thermography combines infrared thermography with various excitation methods, such as laser excitation, and is a form of active thermography. Targeted heat pulses and analysis of the cooling behavior reveal the internal properties of materials. Deviations in heat conduction allow conclusions to be drawn about the material properties and possible defects beneath the surface – quickly, contactlessly, and without damaging the component.

Typical test applications

  • Connection quality of cell connectors in battery modules

  • Quality of laser and spot welded joints and soldered seams

  • Crack detection on metallic or CFRP components

  • Connection quality of layers in laminates and adhesive bonds

  • Coating quality of metallic and hybrid materials

Tailor-made service for the highest demands

For a wide range of applications and beyond, optimal setups for the respective test application are configured in cooperation with partners. This is based on a proven, tailor-made portfolio of services for the automation of test tasks – from project planning and implementation to service. Everything from a single source.
